Reddit. In the beginning was Quest Druid, which however was not favored against Control Warrior and Mage, currently the dominating decks. And that’s exactly why Malygos Druid was built. It easily beats Warrior, and while having a harder time against Mage, it’s still a favorable matchup even if your opponent gets lucky, as the Druid has plenty of resources and survivability

This is my guide on Malygos Druid, with which I reached #13 Legend, having some excellent results

Matchups

As Malygos Druid is a Combo deck, it’s safe to assume that the combo is made against a specific archetype, in this case, Control Warrior or any other Control deck (which are not nearly as popular as the Warrior). Malygos Druid is also favored against Midrange decks

The only problematic matchups are Aggro – Zoolock, Paladin, Shaman or Warrior (while there are not that many of them on ladder, keep that in mind), BUT if you find enough early game or if the opponent does NOT have a perfect curve, you can survive 4 turns, and then fight back with Starfall and Oasis Surger without any problems, which is part of the reason why this deck is so successful

Note that the Legend meta may not be the same as the Rank 5-20 meta, where people usually play Aggro and decks alike, so before crafting Malygos Druid, think about how often you’re facing Aggro decks, or look at your stats if using Hearthstone Deck Tracker. The less popular Aggro is, the higher your winrate

Mulligan

There are 3 main ways of how you should mulligan when playing Malygos Druid – vs. Control, vs. Aggro and in the mirror

IMPORTANT: No matter the matchup, if you have the Coin, ALWAYS use it with the Quest on Turn 1. This is the first rule of Malygos Druid

NOTE: The mulligan guide below is based solely on my experience, depending on the current meta, mulligan may change. Keep that in mind

vs. Control

Malygos Druid was built to counter Control decks, so they can be considered the best matchups. You don’t want to pressure the opponent with your board, use minions as removal instead, you have all the time you need, so focus on drawing cards

Mulligan: Crystal Merchant, Nourish (only one copy), Ferocious Howl. Depending on the matchup’s tempo potential, you can keep Wrath, Starfall, Oasis Surger or Swipe. What does “tempo potential” mean? Well, for example, Control Warrior can have a tempo early game with Eternium Rover, Frightened Flunky, SN1P-SN4P and Omega Devastator. In this case, if you don’t keep at least one removal, you lose

vs. Aggro

Here, things are different. Aggro is the most difficult matchup, no matter the class. If you’re facing an Aggro deck, you need to get a little lucky. The problem is that you’re handicapped for 4 turns, and it’s quite likely that your face gets wrecked in that period of time, however Malygos Druid has some decent answers to prevent that

Mulligan: Pounce (for instance, Zoolock and Midrange Hunter have Flame Imp and Scavenging Hyena respectively, it’s best to kill them immediately or you take a lot of damage, not to mention that other Aggro decks also have similar minions), Wrath, Oasis Surger, Starfall, Wardruid Loti, Hidden Oasis (depending on the other cards in hand, or you’ll end up in situations where you keep Hidden Oasis, then draw Dreampetal Florist and Malygos, making the healing useless as you don’t have the tools to survive up to it), Swipe (a question mark, since it’s technically a 5 mana card, as you wouldn’t want to complete the Quest a turn later, only in extreme cases)

The Mirror

The mirror is similar to Control matchups, however we want to both draw cards and gain tempo, in theory you can win even without the Quest

Mulligan: Any card draw, Oasis Surger (a must keep), Flobbidinous Floop (excellent with Oasis Surger, you don’t have to save it for the OTK in this particular matchup). If the opponent is drawing more cards than you, while you don’t have such an opportunity (bad topdecks), try to play more aggressively

The Combo

So why is Malygos Druid strong? It cycles the deck very quickly and can deal a lot of damage. Even Warrior, with all the Armor, is unable to survive just how much damage the Druid deals

The main combo is based on Malygos, Elise the Enlightened, Flobbidinous Floop, Moonfire and Dreampetal Florist. The 44 damage combo is what you’ll need in most matchups, with the exception of Warrior. Play Elise the Enlightened, duplicating Flobbidinous Floop and two copies of Moonfire, play Malygos, then the next turn play two copies of Maly-Floop with 4 copies of Moonfire, dealing 44 damage in total

The 64 damage combo is what you’ll most likely need against Warrior. Using Dreampetal Florist, reduce the cost of Malygos to 2 mana. Doesn’t matter if you have one or multiple minions in hand, you have to play Dreampetal Florist and you have to reduce the cost of Malygos. If that doesn’t happen and the Warrior manages to gain enough Armor, you won’t have enough damage, only being able to do the 44 damage combo. That does not mean the game is lost however, you still have a chance to win, but it’s less likely. However on average, you do get to reduce the cost of Malygos, as there are not that many minions in the deck, so it’s easy to set up a situation where you’ll have the highest chance of reducing the cost of Malygos. There still are exceptions, though

If you do succeed with getting Malygos to cost 2 mana, you’re able to do the 64 damage combo. Play Elise the Enlightened, duplicating Malygos and two copies of Moonfire. The next turn, play two copies of Malygos and one Maly-Floop, which will make the 4 copies of Moonfire deal 16 damage each, resulting in 64 damage

In case 64 damage isn’t enough, an 84 damage combo is also possible. Using Elise the Enlightened, you have to duplicate Innervate, two copies of Moonfire, Flobbidinous Floop and a 2 mana Malygos. Then, do the same thing you would do with the 64 damage combo, but also use your two copies of Innervate to play the 4th Malygos, giving you an 84 damage total

Tips

  • Don’t forget about using the Coin with the Quest on Turn 1 (very important)
  • Don’t forget that you’d never want to spend all your mana with an incomplete Quest
  • Nourish refreshes 2 mana, even if you already have 10 mana
  • Elise the Enlightened duplicates cards RANDOMLY. This is very important in some matchups. If you have 6 or less cards in hand, Elise the Enlightened being the 6th, all the cards will definitely be duplicated. If you have 7 or more cards in hand, the duplicated cards are random, which could lead to losing a combo piece. This is important, as you’ll have situations where you have more than 6 cards in hand and you have to play Elise the Enlightened because you won’t have the time otherwise. In these kinds of situations, make sure to plan ahead
  • Malygos is not your only win condition. A lot of people, especially new players, think that when playing a Combo decks, you’ll always win with the combo, even vs. Aggro or Midrange. That is not true. You can also win by simply pressuring the opponent with your minions, for example, play Oasis Surger, play Floop-Surger the next turn, keep pressuring with minions, then just finish off the opponent with Malygos and Moonfire. In this case, Malygos is used not as a combo piece, but as a finisher – it’s not even an OTK. Remember that the combo is not the only win condition, you should learn to adapt your win condition depending on the situation, which only comes with experience

Conclusion

Malygos Druid is an interesting deck, although it’s not cheap, having 4 Legendaries and 5 Epics, none of which can really be replaced, so think twice before crafting it for yourself

If you do decide to craft it though, I hope my guide helps you a lot. Playing this deck will also make you more experienced in playing Combo decks in general

With that said, I hope this guide was informative enough for you to learn the essentials of playing Malygos Druid

Note that experience is not something a guide can give. Only experience can help you make difficult decisions and adapt to the situation. You might need to play 10-20 games first to get experienced with the deck. Keep that in mind
