Hearthstone: Grandmasters Playoff Recap
Season one of 2021’s Grandmasters tournament ended like it began— surrounded with player controversy. Despite a drama-filled final within the European region, these playoff champions will join season two’s winners, alongside two others from China’s Gold Series, in the Hearthstone world championship later this year. Season one’s finalists were Nalguidan, Frenetic, and Posesi.
The European finals between xBlyzes and Frenetic ended abruptly during game five in a 2-3 series, when xBlyzes disconnected from the server after receiving a series of bad draws from his Weapon Rogue deck. The casters, Raven and Sottle, immediately recognize the ragequit, saying that it is “a brutal way to lose the series, but at the same time it’s very cruel to Frenetic who has to sit and wait to get confirmation from the admin”. With xBlyzes’ previous accusations of win-trading, many people in the community are calling his behaviour unsportsmanlike.
If you missed the playoff finals, here’s a recap of the top 4 finishers and how much these pros have earned in total during this Grandmasters season.
Playoff point system:
- Players earn 1 point per game won. The double elimination system gives players a second chance to qualify for Top 4 if they win their decider match.
Though only three players qualified for the world championship, these other competitors have earned a large chunk of cash for their efforts as professionals. Unlike Masters tour where players only receive packs, GM playoffs each give players a chance at earning a sizeable amount depending on their placements. The player who earns 1st place in the playoff bracket earns $2,500, 2nd earns $2,000, 3rd– 4th earns $1,500, and 5th-8th earns $1,000.
The table below shows all 24 players who participated in playoffs and how much they have earned throughout these past eight weeks, including the regular season:
